What is Abalone?

Abalone is a sea dwelling mollusc that forages the ocean floor for algae and broken down kelp. They have a preference for cold water and an ability to grip tightly to rock ledges. There are many species in the Haliotidae family, however, it is the 'Blacklip' variety that thrives in the waters off Mallacoota.

"Divers harvest abalone from the sea floor with sickles that detach the shell from the rocks to which they cling with their sucker feet."

"Most of them are young men and all of them are competent divers, in hard conditions. To use the divers' words this is a job which quickly separates the men from the boys."
